Alopecia: Does Low Vitamin D Levels Cause Hair Loss?

There is no definitive research to suggest that low vitamin D leads to hair loss. We just do not know whether he did or not. Also, do not really know whether low levels of vitamin D may have a negative impact on hair growth. Certainly, there is evidence that vitamin D has some importance for the normal function of hair.

When vitamin D binds to the vitamin D receptor, a series of profound changes occur in our cells. We know that serious abnormalities in vitamin D can indeed be associated with hair loss. For example, inheritance of children born with a condition known as Type II rickets vitamin D depends on a defect in vitamin D receptor. These children have normal hair in the first months after birth, but then slowly lose hair about 3 months of age.

It does not change the scientific evidence that vitamin D is important for hair growth. Today, we are able to create in the laboratory mice missing the receptor for vitamin D. These mice are born in the hair, but then lose it after birth and are completely bald at the age of 8 months.

So far, only few studies assessing the role of vitamin D in human hair. This, however, was found to be true only for certain types of chemotherapy, and vitamin D could prevent the loss of hair after chemotherapy others.

We do not really understand all the functions of vitamin D when it comes to hair growth and hair loss. Furthermore, we do not really know whether low vitamin D is not related to hair loss. But Vitamin D is probably very important when it comes to the overall health of hair.
